Mayor Mike Hurley and Burnaby City Council are pleased to present the Kushiro Cup to Len Soet, 2023's Outstanding Citizen of the Year.

Len won the award for his countless hours of volunteering at numerous non-profit organizations. He’s been an active volunteer in Burnaby for over 16 years and has demonstrated remarkable dedication and passion for community service.

From serving on the Board of Directors at Journey Home, to serving meals to individuals experiencing homelessness as a volunteer at The Society to End Homelessness, to teaching ESL to new immigrants as they acclimate to their new Burnaby Community at Willingdon Church, Len exemplifies volunteerism. Len also spends time volunteering with five other organizations during the year.

“Len was born to volunteer! He has given generously of his time to volunteer in his community for causes he has a passion for. When it comes to volunteering Len steps up,” said Len’s nominees. “The success of non-profit organizations are dependent on volunteers who give tirelessly of their time back to the community. Len has been exceptional in this respect. He brings excellent interpersonal skills, delivers on his commitments and is truly a very caring and honest person.”

The Outstanding Citizen of the Year award honours Burnaby citizens who make tremendous contributions to their community and supports the City's Corporate Strategic Plan goals of having a connected, inclusive and healthy community.
