Water Bodies

Water Bodies

Lakes, rivers, steams and even access to the mighty Pacific: It’s easy enough to float your boat or contemplate a quick dip from dry land in Burnaby. The big two choices for recreational paddlers: Burnaby Lake and Deer Lake, both in the central heart of the city and home to resident populations of blue herons, turtles and beavers. And for those who want to explore the sheltered waters of Indian Arm or the tanker-dotted Burrard Inlet, there’s launch facilities for canoes, kayaks and sailing craft at Barnet Marine Park.

The City of Burnaby keeps an eye on the health of our waterways. We’re joined in this vital mission by streamkeepers, the volunteer organizations dedicated to saving the critically important watersheds via public education and community clean-up projects. Their efforts to stock depleted streams with cut-throat trout and both coho and chum salmon have been an eco triumph of no small measure.

Decomposing plant life and water-quality fluctuation limit swimming opportunities in urban lakes across North America. Deer Lake and Burnaby Lake are no exception. But factor in our recreation centre swimming pools, and there’s no shortage of opportunities to get all wet!
