Parking
Like with any other city, in Burnaby you can’t just park anywhere. Our Street & Traffic Bylaw (No. 4299) and Parking Meter Bylaw (No. 10605) outline Burnaby's parking rules. Through the use of on-street signs and regulations, the City restricts times, length of time, usage and location of parking spaces.

- What are the restrictions on resident parking?
-
If you live in Burnaby, you’ll know that street parking is often a resource in demand with scarce supply. In and around your street you’ll notice neighbours try to share street space as best they can. Please note:
-
You are not allowed to save your parking space in front of your home with cones, pylons or buckets. All on-street parking is considered public parking unless otherwise signed by the City. Objects left on the street can create a hazard and will be confiscated.
-
Burnaby does not provide Residential Parking Only Permits except near Burnaby General Hospital. The use of time limits are preferred to ensure the streets are publicly accessible to all residents and visitors.
-
Having no regulations on a street does not mean you can park there all day. Burnaby has a bylaw that restricts parking of greater than 3 hours between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM in front of any home or business that you don’t own or work for. This bylaw is only applied in circumstances where no other remedy is available.

- Do I need approval to store a POD container?
-
If you are planning a move or small renovation and need a place to store a POD container, you'll need to place a POD Placement Request. Typically POD placement is approved if you cannot store the container on your own private property and it is for short-term placement.
-
- My construction project requires street or parking space. Who should I contact?
-
If you are doing a construction job and are requiring street space to store a storage bin temporarily, or if you are requiring some construction parking or parking meters to be hooded, please contact the parking services supervisor to discuss your requirements. A fee may be required to compensate for revenue loss and administrative needs.

Parking Meters
- Why do we need metered parking?
-
Metered parking benefits residents and businesses. Installing on-street parking meters:
-
Promotes the availability of convenient on street parking for business patrons. On-street parking spaces in commercial areas are often the ones that could potentially generate the most business for merchants, if they were available. Metered parking encourages turnover of parking spaces and deters commuters from using on-street parking for extended periods of time.
-
Improves bylaw enforcement. Meters tend to be self-enforcing; they reduce the need for enforcement personnel to chalk tires or note license numbers and then make a return trip to issue violation notices. Meters also define on-street parking spaces and deter unsafe crowding of driveways, intersections and fire zones. As a result, enforcement staff will have more time to focus on other traffic safety violations.
-
Recovers more of the City's costs and promotes public transit. Accommodating private vehicle has many associated costs for roads, traffic management, policing and parking. These costs are often not directly paid by the motorist. Metered parking is one way of directly recovering the cost of providing parking services to users and it helps promote public transit.

- When are parking meters installed?
-
Parking meters are generally installed in commercial areas where there is a high demand for parking. This could be at the request of business owners or by the City to resolve a parking problem. When installed businesses have found either no negative impact or increased business due to higher parking turnover. Parking occupancy surveys can be conducted where necessary to monitor parking changes.

- What have other cities done?
-
Burnaby has far less on street paid parking than many other Canadian municipalities. In the Greater Vancouver Region, many municipalities have initiated various paid parking programs. Most are more extensive than Burnaby's.
In some commercial districts in the City of Vancouver merchants have requested on-street pay parking to help free up parking spaces and to increase business traffic turnover. They have found that off-street parking is not as convenient for shoppers who want to make quick stops.
In New Westminster, in the early 1990's, on street paid parking was removed because the City believed that it was deterring traffic to the business community. After removing the parking meters they found that the meters had little impact on the businesses. The City has now reinstalled the meters and is expanding the paid parking area.
-
- How much will I have to pay?
-
Parking times and rates vary depending on parking pressure and user requirements. Most parking meters in Burnaby have a rate of $1 per hour between 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Please check maximum parking time allowed and parking rate by reading the information on the face and post of the parking meter.
