- When does the Burnaby Fire Department accept applications and is there a deadline?

The Burnaby Fire Department accepts Applications throughout the year. August 31st of each year is the deadline for hiring of the following year.

Fire Prevention

- Are barbeques allowed in apartment buildings?

Barbeques are allowed on outdoor balconies for cooking only. Please check with your strata council and/or manager for in-house rules.

- Can propane be stored in an enclosed parking garage?

No, propane must be stored outside in a security cage and locked.

- There is a vacant building that is open to intrusion nearby, what can be done about it?

Inform the RCMP or the City Building Department.

- There is dried natural debris (such as leaves, grass, branches) in my neighbourhood. Is this a fire hazard?

Any dry natural debris is a possible fire hazard.

- What is the requirement for fire alarms/smoke detectors in apartment buildings in Burnaby?
-
Any Apartment building built after 1980 is required to have a fire alarm system, as per the B.C. Building Code. The City of Burnaby has a volunteer Fire Alarm Upgrade program for any apartment buildings classified as Group C, built prior to 1980. Smoke detectors are always tied into the fire alarm system.

- Are you allowed to have outside burning, e.g. fire pit, pizza oven, garbage, yard trimmings, etc.?

No outside burning is permitted within Burnaby under the City Fire Services Bylaw, unless approved for a Burning Permit From the Fire Chief. A charcoal, natural gas or propane fire contained within barbecues (CSA) approved is permitted for cooking food.

- Who is responsible for deciding occupancy loads of a building or room?

Contact the Plan Checking Division of the City Building Department.

- How often should there be a fire drill in my building?

Refer to your Fire Safety Plan through the manager or strata council of your building.

- Can I set fireworks off on New Year’s Eve or any other holiday, wedding or special event?

No, the 31st of October is the only time Fireworks may be set off. Please refer to Burnaby Fire Services Bylaw No. 11860 for more details

- How do I submit my Fire Safety Plans?

Send the Fire Safety Plan electronically for review at BFDFireSafetyPlan@burnaby.ca, in PDF format (required).

- As a building or business owner, how frequently should I review my Fire Safety Plan?

Yearly or if any alterations to the site plan and floor plans have been made.

- How do I find out if a permit to install or remove an underground storage tank exists for my property?

Send a written request (email, mail or fax) for an Environmental Record Search of the property in question asking for any record of a Tank Installation and/or Removal Permit (include property address).
