Who We Are
The Public Works Division of the Engineering Department is responsible for maintenance and operation of the City's roads, water, sanitary/combined sewers, and storm sewers. As well we are responsible for all rehabilitation and replacement work for ageing pipes and roads.
What We Do
Roads Section
The Roads Section is responsible for:
The maintenance of roads, sidewalks, dykes and bridge structures including:
- Sidewalks
- Surface Drainage
- Flood Control
- Boulevard & Median Maintenance
- Road Surface Maintenance
- Road Improvement
- Winter Operations
Water Section
The Water Section provides high quality drinking water to homes and businesses, as well as water supply for fire suppression. This section installs and maintains hundreds of kilometres of water mains and connections throughout the Municipality and oversees water purchases from the Greater Vancouver Water District.
The Water Section is responsible for:
- Monitoring of the City water supply system to ensure safe drinking water
- Servicing fire hydrants
- Water meter installation, maintenance, and reading
- Installing service connections to residents and businesses
- Flushing of watermains
- Repairing broken or damaged water mains and services
- Watermain construction
- Leak detection
- Pump station and valve maintenance and operation
Our crews respond to emergency calls for broken water mains or leaky services and undertake regular maintenance of the valves, hydrants, pump stations and reservoirs that make up our water system components.
Sewers Section
We provide maintenance and construction of the City’s sanitary and storm sewer infrastructure. This section provides and maintains an effective and reliable sanitary sewage collection system and transfer to the Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District facilities for treatment.
The Sewers section is responsible for:
- Flushing sanitary and storm sewer lines
- Inspection and maintenance of sanitary sewer mains
- Maintenance of sanitary sewer manholes
- Clearing blockages to sanitary and storm sewer mains and services to property line
- Sanitary and storm construction
- Lift station maintenance and operation
- Maintain conveyance of storm water through a collection system to receiving environments in creeks and rivers
