Mayor & Council
The Mayor and Council are elected by the residents of Burnaby and are responsible for providing municipal government services. The Mayor is the head and chief executive officer of the City. The Council is the governing body of the City, and is responsible for seeing that City resources are used for the benefit and protection of its citizens.

The City is advised by various Boards, Committees, and Commissions which are appointed by City Council. Executive bodies, appointed by Council, make decisions within guidelines provided by Council.
These bodies include:
- Board of Variance – Accountable for approving requests for minor variances to the Burnaby Zoning Bylaw regarding the site, size and dimensions of buildings.
- Parks, Recreation & Culture Commission – Accountable for the development, maintenance and operation of all parks and parks' property and the organization of recreation programs in the City.
- Public Library Board – Accountable for the operation of all libraries in Burnaby.
Advisory bodies, appointed by Council, are identified in the City’s Organizational Chart. These bodies advise and make recommendations to City Council.
