World Flag Project

World Flag

Grade 6 and 7 students from  Edmonds Community School each created an inidividual “World Flag”.

While exploring paper-cutting art processes of French artist Henri Matisse, students discussed colour/contrast and studied the symbolism found in flags from different countries. In groups, students came up with a list of ideas of what positive things we have all over the world that celebrate life. Looking at the list, each student used graph paper and coloured pencils to make thumbnail sketches of flag designs. After discussion and critiques at each session, students chose one sketch, made it larger and from this, they created their final piece using coloured card paper.

The artworks represent each student’s vision of a World Flag for the Planet Earth.
