This public information meeting will provide you with the information you need regarding the City’s plans to respond to the 2012 Fraser River Freshet and any potential flood.

When: Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Note that a public presentation will be made at 4:30 p.m. and repeated at 6:00 p.m.

Ceramic Arts Instructors

Rosemary Amon

Rosemary Amon has been making pots since 1979, working mainly as a functional production potter. She has formally studied at Capilano College, Brookhouse Pottery in Wales, and the Emily Carr College of Art. She has attended numerous workshops and short courses in Canada and England, and taught both private classes in her own studio and programs for The Potters Guild of BC, Capilano College and the Shadbolt Centre.

Vin Arora

Vin is a graduate of Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (ceramic arts). He currently manages his own studio and teaches both youth and adult pottery and ceramics. Vin has gained valuable teaching experience working with the LearningThroughtheArts program. Whether through sculpture or pottery, he enjoys sharing his passion for clay with students of all ages.

Linda Doherty

Linda has been a working potter for over 20 years. Her keen interest in expanding her knowledge of pottery has taken her to Peru, Thailand, Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, and India. Linda’s work has been shown throughout Vancouver and in Burnaby, and has been featured in books including the American Ceramic Society’s book, Extruded Ceramics. In addition to teaching beginner to continuing level pottery classes at the Shadbolt Centre, Linda also works here as a kiln technician.

Sabrina Keskula

Sabrina holds Bachelor of Fine Art degrees in studio, photography and ceramics from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and UBC.  She attained her BEd Degree from UBC in 1992 (her teaching major in art), and was awarded the Elmore Ozard Art Education Prize by the UBC Faculty of Education.  As an artist and art educator, Sabrina receives pleasure and satisfaction from playing a role in the learning, growth and development of children and adults. Sabrina has been teaching beginner and continuing level ceramic classes at the Shadbolt Centre since 1998.

Jay MacLennan

Jay graduated from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 1993 with a BA, specializing in ceramics and was awarded a year’s residency from the Potters Guild of BC. Jay has been working as a teacher and kiln technician at the Shadbolt Centre, where he has been sharing his expertise in both low and high temperature glazes since 1995. He works primarily on the wheel and then alters these thrown forms. His work has been shown regularly at the Gallery of BC Ceramics, and was featured in the book Made of Clay: Ceramics of British Columbia.

Gail Nichols

Australian ceramic artist, Gail Nichols, is recognized internationally for her innovative work with soda vapour glazing.  Her book, Soda Clay and Fire has been heralded as a leading text in the field.  Gail completed her PhD at Monash University in 2002 and now teaches at the School of Art, Australian National University in Canberra.  She lives and  works on a rural property near Braidwood, New South Wales. She is widely published and exhibited, and the winner of numerous grants,awards and commissions worldwide.

Charmian Nimmo

Charmian began potting in high school and, after graduating, apprenticed with a production potter for three years before starting her own studio, making and selling functional work in BC. and across Canada. In 1992, Charmian began teaching pottery at various community centres in Vancouver. In addition to regular classes, she has also taught numerous workshops on tile and fountain making, hand-building and wheel-throwing. She also currently manages the West End Community Centre Pottery Studio and continues to sell her work through several galleries in BC.

Fredi Rahn

Fredi studied at Sheridan College of Crafts & Design and received her BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art & Design. She has taught foundation ceramics at Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design and has been teaching at the Shadbolt Centre since 1990. Fredi creates one-of-a-kind functional and decorative pieces in her Vancouver based studio and exhibits her work across Canada and the United States.

David Robinson

David is passionate about the virtues of art and excited to share these experiences with others. As a ceramics teacher for the Shadbolt's preschool classes, he focuses on nurturing the exploration of the individual and assisting students in transcending any preconceived notions of what it means to create art. David received his BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design and his ceramic work has been showcased at the BC Gallery of Ceramics, Interior Design Show West and the One Of A Kind Show and Sale in Vancouver.

Jim Robison

Head of Ceramics at Leeds University College in England for 27 years, author of Large Scale Ceramics and co-author of the recently published Slab Building Techniques, Jim Robison’s work reflects his enthusiasm for the ceramic medium.  Jim enjoys an experimental approach  to making and his work, which is usually slab built and slip decorated,  includes large-scale sculpture and architectural ceramics as well as functional pieces. He often combines personal construction techniques with unusual surface textures, multiple layers of clay and colourful glazes.

Debra Sloan

From 1973–1979 Debra was part owner, manager and teacher of a pottery school. She attended Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design, graduating with honours. Debra and her husband built a studio and developed a slipware line, using clay she dug out of a hillside in Haney, BC. She exhibits regularly and sells her work at the Potters Guild Gallery, Craft House and Gae Shulman’s Gallery in San Francisco. Debra began teaching Clay Sculpture at the Shadbolt Centre in 1991.
