 Seaforth School
6501 Deer Lake Avenue (Deer Lake Park)
In 1921, in the Lozells area, north of Burnaby Lake, about two dozen of the local children were forced to walk three miles to the nearest school. Concerned that bears and cougars were roaming the district, local parents petitioned the School Board for a school which was completed and opened on September 7, 1922. The school was named after its sponsor: the Seaforth Chapter of the Imperial Order of Daughters of the Empire. The Burnaby School Board's architects Bowman & Cullerne designed the one room school house following the standards of British Columbia school architecture. The building remained in continuous use until June 1983, even after the completion of a modern school on the same site at Government Road and Piper Street in 1958. The school was moved to Heritage Village on July 6, 1983. The building now serves as a popular educational exhibit. Seaforth School was protected as a designated heritage building in 1984.
