About Metro Skate Park
Metro Skate Park, located in the heart of Burnaby’s Metrotown area was opened in 2004. An extensive public consultation process resulted in the design of a unique multi-level and multi-skill family skate park, which provides access to skateboarders of all ages from the beginner to the advanced. The City of Burnaby also pioneered the use of an environmentally friendly concrete for skateparks. The concrete had remarkable success not only in the impact on the environment, but also created a higher quality and more durable surface.
The designers for Metro Skate Park were a team combination of Spectrum Skatepark Creations and Space2Place Design Inc. Landscape Architects.
Other awards Metro Skate Park have received include:
- Canadian Park and Recreation Association Award of Excellence for Innovation
- BC Recreation and Parks Association Facility Excellence Award
- Skaters for Public Skateparks – Skatepark Terrain Diversity Award
- Connie Award for Excellence in Concrete Construction
The International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) is the only organisation for sports facilities recognised by the IOC. The IAKS and their members in over 110 countries are specialists for all questions concerning sports and leisure facilities.
