City Recognizes 2021 Environmental Awards Recipients

The City of Burnaby is pleased to announce the winners of the 2021 Environmental Awards, recognizing individuals and community groups that have made significant contributions to the sustainability of Burnaby’s environment.

“The recipients of Burnaby’s Environmental Awards have dedicated themselves to protecting and enhancing our natural spaces, wildlife and environment,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “They are role models in our community and we greatly appreciate their efforts.”

Environmental Awards recognize large-scale achievements that have a broad community impact. Recipients for 2021 include:

  • Reclaim Plastics (formerly BumperNow) for their innovative solution to ensure environmental sustainability through waste diversion.
  • Ann Green and Bryan Green for their outstanding leadership and dedication to environmental stewardship, ecosystem restoration and community education.
  • Simon Fraser University for their role in developing the Biomass District Heating Plant that showcases the use of district heating systems as a sustainable heat source to achieve greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.
  • Lilah Williamson for her outstanding commitment to climate activism through public engagement and awareness. 

Environmental Stars recognize achievements of a smaller or individual scale that may serve to catalyze larger initiatives and inspire others. Recipients for 2021 include:

  • BCIT for the South Wetland Restoration Project for their exceptional commitment to ecological restoration.
  • Les Leighton for his outstanding commitment to environmental stewardship and community education.
  • Force of Nature for their ongoing dedication and commitment to community outreach campaigns that increase awareness to environmentally sustainable initiatives. 
  • Burnaby Youth Sustainability Network for their outstanding environmental leadership and ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability through school programs. 

Recipients of the 2021 awards were announced at the May 31, 2021 Burnaby City Council meeting.
