City of Burnaby Wins Financial Achievement Awards

2017 Annual Municipal Report CoverBurnaby, BC – The City of Burnaby has earned the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting and the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting (PAFR) by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for its 2017 annual financial report.  In addition, the City’s Director of Finance, Noreen Kassam, has been recognized with the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting Achievement for her lead role in Burnaby’s Finance Department.

According to GFOA, the annual Canadian Award for Financial Reporting recognizes excellence in governmental accounting and financial reporting and represents a significant accomplishment by a municipal government and its management. The PAFR Award recognizes an annual financial report’s reader appeal and understandability, among other attributes.

“We are very honoured and proud to have earned these awards from the prestigious Government Finance Officers Association,” says Noreen Kassam.  “Our finance team makes a great effort in creating a financial report that’s clear, comprehensive and transparent – and it’s wonderful to see this diligence and effort be recognized with these national awards.”

The Canadian Award for Financial Reporting Program was established to encourage municipal governments throughout Canada to publish high-quality financial reports and provide peer recognition and technical guidance for officials preparing these reports.

The City’s annual financial report was judged by an impartial Canadian Review Committee to meet the Program’s high standards, including demonstrating a constructive spirit of full disclosure designed to clearly communicate the municipality’s financial story and encourage readership.
