Hot Weather in Store for Southwestern BC

Posted July 13, 2018

While hot and sunny conditions are welcomed news for most, Environment and Climate Change Canada and Medical Health Officers are reminding residents to take precautions to protect themselves from the heat. Keep cool by:

  • Spending time in an air-conditioned facility (such as a shopping centre, library, community centre or restaurant) for at least several hours every day.
  • Dress for the weather by wearing loose, light-weight clothing. Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
  • Avoid sunburn, stay in the shade or use sunscreen with SPF 30 or more
  • NEVER leave children or pets alone in a parked car.
  • Check in on others - People living alone are at high risk of severe heat related illness.

Gear up for the Giro di Burnaby

Giro - Pietro Calendino

For Immediate Release

Burnaby, BC – The 11th annual Giro di Burnaby, presented by Appia Development, returns to Burnaby on July 12. As one of nine pro races during BC Superweek, the Giro di Burnaby will once again welcome some of the world’s most skilled cyclists to the historic Burnaby Heights neighbourhood.

“We’re thrilled to welcome professional cyclists from around the world to participate in the Giro di Burnaby,” says Mayor Derek Corrigan. “The Giro di Burnaby not only showcases professional cycling, but it’s also one of our free, annual city events that bring our community together in celebration.”

The Giro di Burnaby is a criterium race which is the most action-packed, spectator-friendly form of bicycle road racing consisting of many laps on a course 1.14 kilometres in length. The fast and technical circuit loop takes cyclists along and around Hastings Street in the very heart of the Burnaby Heights neighbourhood, with riders whizzing by at speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour.

More than 225 athletes will participate in the 2018 event, competing for over $15,000 in prize money. The Giro di Burnaby is well known for the generosity of the businesses and the crowds with thousands of dollars in primes available. Primes (pronounced preem), are sprint contests for money or prizes when racers cross the start/finish line on the next lap.

Burnaby’s Giro was named in tribute to Burnaby’s vibrant Italian-Canadian community and the world-famous Giro d’Italia.
