Council Approves Addition of RCMP Police Resources

To ensure the consistent delivery of police services and implement unique policing programs, at its July 23, 2018 meeting, Burnaby City Council approved a recommendation from the City’s Public Safety Committee for the addition of 14 police officers to the Burnaby RCMP, eight for 2018 and six for 2019. The Committee put forward the recommendation after a thorough service and resource allocation review.

The officers added in 2018 will be placed onto General Duty to:

  • contribute toward reduced response times by having an extra police car on the road;
  • immediately respond to priority calls for service, such as 9-1-1 calls;
  • patrol in areas with high crime trends;
  • contribute toward road safety by conducting traffic enforcement; and
  • provide additional capacity for the detachment to address emerging public safety issues.

The six officers added in 2019 will be assigned as follows:

  • four deployed to General Duty to undertake duties as outlined for the 2018 additional officers;
  • two will be deployed at the discretion of the Officer in Charge, dependent on operational and emerging needs of the detachment and community.

In Burnaby, Public Safety is a collaborative effort.

While City staff, volunteers, RCMP Burnaby Detachment and community leaders work together on these initiatives, there is a lot you can do to contribute. By keeping up with tips, news and safety programs, by preparing for emergencies and by educating yourself on safety contacts, you help keep yourself and your city safe.
