Hot Weather in Store for Southwestern BC

Posted July 13, 2018

While hot and sunny conditions are welcomed news for most, Environment and Climate Change Canada and Medical Health Officers are reminding residents to take precautions to protect themselves from the heat. Keep cool by:

  • Spending time in an air-conditioned facility (such as a shopping centre, library, community centre or restaurant) for at least several hours every day.
  • Dress for the weather by wearing loose, light-weight clothing. Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
  • Avoid sunburn, stay in the shade or use sunscreen with SPF 30 or more
  • NEVER leave children or pets alone in a parked car.
  • Check in on others - People living alone are at high risk of severe heat related illness.

Citizen Support Services has over 300 volunteers filling a variety of roles in support of our programs. We are always looking for great people to help with our programs and encourage you to Sign Up

Do you like driving? Currently, we are  looking for drivers (mileage reimbursed) for our Thursday Social Lunch  and Gadabouts Bus Outings Program; once a month on a Wednesday.

Is your passion and experience with babies? Can you help once a month? We are looking for retired/self employed volunteers for Public Health Clinics, to weigh and measure babies for one 3 hour shift once a month or to visit a new mom once a week for 3 hours for up to 3 months, in our Baby Cuddle Program.  We are also seeking volunteer visitors to visit a senior in their home for 2 hours weekly. Please check back frequently. Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Citizen Support Services.

If you have a clean driving record, find out how to be a Volunteer Driver. We always need drivers to provide transportation to and from events for seniors or people with disabilities who are unable to use transit.

We are excited to announce the City of Burnaby has purchased new volunteer management software to help us engage volunteers efficiently and effectively. The new system is web-based which enables volunteers to create and manage their own profiles, and sign up for volunteer opportunities using
