Joel GIBBS

Joel GIBBS

Burnaby Green Party

Joel Gibbs is a Logistics Co-ordinator in a worker's co-operative, focusing on emissions-free delivery. He brings his passion for sustainable transportation, affordable housing, and community-building urban design to city council. Joel is running for council because he realizes the need for Burnaby to be accessible, affordable and inclusive for everyone. The dire lack of affordable rental housing, along with continued demovictions and displacement of over 1000 people from their homes is the most significant issue facing Burnaby. Joel Gibbs with the Burnaby Green Party will stop demovictions and create a path forward for affordable housing across Burnaby. As an advocate for walkable, community-oriented cities, Joel focuses on the need to increase the diversity of housing and local-serving retail throughout Burnaby. With half our pollution coming from transportation, he will push to build safe, accessible options for active transportation and transit to combat climate change.

Dan JOHNSTON

Dan JOHNSTON

BCA - Burnaby Citizens Association

Dan's passion for environmental initiatives helped make Burnaby the Lower Mainland's green heart. He was first elected to Council 1993, after serving on Burnaby’s Parks Commission, and has since been re-elected seven times. A Certified General Accountant, Dan combines financially prudence with his ability to get things done as a Councillor. His oversight of projects – Eileen Daily Pool, Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, Riverway Golf Course, Fire Hall No 7 and the Tommy Douglas Library – have been significant. He was instrumental in introducing Burnaby's Recreation Credit to improve access to recreation services for the financially disadvantaged and influential in developing the city's Youth Policy to give young people a voice. But Dan is proudest of Burnaby's innovative environmental initiatives that now serve as models for other cities across the Lower Mainland and beyond. Dan is seeking re-election to ensure Burnaby remains a liveable and financially strong City.

Colleen JORDAN

Colleen JORDAN

BCA - Burnaby Citizens Association

Living and working in Burnaby since 1976, Colleen Jordan was first elected to Council in 2002. Re-elected four times, her strength as a Councillor stems from her community activism with boards and projects. Working as a media librarian for Burnaby schools, she grew to value the role of public employees in providing quality public services that make communities great. For 14 years, with one of BC's largest labour unions, she protected these valuable services and the jobs they create. Colleen is proud of the improvements made to the density bonus program that allows developers to create additional revenue, and provides the city with revenue and amenities that would otherwise be a draw on the tax base. Examples include being able to build 1000 units of non-market housing, childcare centres, and projects like the Tommy Douglas Library and the just approved Norland supportive housing for those experiencing homelessness.

Charter LAU

Charter LAU

BFC - Burnaby First Coalition

Charter Lau fell in love with Burnaby when he came to Canada 27 years ago. He studied design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and runs a video production business. He was a Trustee with a legal defense fund for victims of unjust child removal. As a father of two lovely daughters, he has watched them grow in tandem with his tax bill. The girls have completed their growth, but his taxes continue to expand while roads, hospital service, and policing appear stagnant. Municipal services are not keeping pace with the expanding population. He believes a democratically elected City Hall should include critical components such as an effective opposition. Burnaby deserves better. We need a change. We need a business-friendly Burnaby, transparency of governance, much-needed housing options and better policing.

Through her work, Heather has witnessed an alarming increase in the number of young people admitted to care homes because of brain damage caused by drug overdose. Claire PRESTON

Claire PRESTON

Our concerns are not new: Demovication and affordable housing; our impact on the environment; and traffic, transit, and road maintenance. We want to be able to work and live in Burnaby. We want to be able to afford to raise our families here. Our winters have been getting colder, longer and snowier, yet our city still struggles to deal with winter weather safely. Climate change is not going to go away, and we must have a municipal government that is prepared to act now, not in 10 years. Burnaby has the resources at its disposal to tackle these issues. All we need is the will to act. My name is Claire Preston, and I want a council that proactively confronts the challenges facing Burnaby head on. Let’s build a prosperous future.

Nick VOLKOW

Nick VOLKOW

BCA - Burnaby Citizens Association

A Burnaby resident since 1983, I was first elected to Council in 1996. I wanted progress on youth, environmental and transportation issues. With three young children, I sought opportunities for youth to gather and play in safe, supportive environments. I’m proud that Burnaby now has four well-used youth centres – one in each quadrant of our city – and two skateboard parks. Our award-winning Burnaby Lake dredging, removed 180,000 cubic meters of contaminated sediment. We enhanced water quality, fish passage and wildlife habitat, while providing excellent rowing, kayaking and canoeing. Cleaned sediment was perfect to improve nearby playing fields, saving trucking costs and decreasing environmental impact. As Transportation Committee Chair, I work to improve pedestrian, cyclist, rider and driver safety. The 24-km Central Valley Greenway now links parks, shopping, workplaces and major transit hubs. We have three new pedestrian overpasses. Please re-elect me on October 20.
