Helen H. S. CHANG

I was elected in 2005 as one of Burnaby School Trustee and served for 3 years until 2008. From 2010 I have organized community forums covering multicultural issues such as hate crime, school bullying, immigration fraud, medical fraud and women’s issues. In 2010 I tabled a petition to our Parliament to request that a Hate Crime Statistical Act be implemented. In addition to running small business, I have been doing research works for victimology covering hate crime, identity frauds, and medical fraud. I will work to make Burnaby more inclusive and safe for every citizen if I’m going to be elected.

Derek Corrigan

BCA - Burnaby Citizens Association

I am very proud to have served the citizens of Burnaby since 1987, first as a councillor, now as Mayor. Burnaby citizens have shaped a beautiful, sustainable city that is strengthened by diversity and engagement. The Burnaby we enjoy today reflects years of citizen-driven planning and involvement. It is my great honour to partner with citizens. Working on local, regional and international committees – including currently as chair of TransLink’s Mayors’ Council and Metro’s Climate Action Committee – I consistently strive to represent and advance your goals and aspirations. In addition to representing you locally, I also support the International Mayors for Peace. I’m proud to have been awarded the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Green Champion Award and the Canada 125 Medal – and to be an honorary citizen of Seoul, Korea, Zhongshan, China and Kushiro, Japan. I would be honoured to continue to serve the citizens of Burnaby as Mayor.

Sylvia GUNG

Dear Citizens: Since July 2017, Sylvia Gung has wandered in Vancouver’s DTES, exploring the services and mental health programs provided by various organizations or governments in this painful neighbourhood. Over a decade after volunteered as a parent classroom assistant every day, all day, for a school year, she has written letters to offer simple suggestions to unions, teachers, and politicians about the problems of public education. As you can guess, nobody listened, and problems become more serious and spread further. For a livable society, the police and Translink need assistance to rehabilitate themselves. Children need to be free of job training and to get more of music and exercise. Abolishing municipal election campaigns can solve housing problems. Taxation needs adjustments. Mostly, the tension and anger in society need to be released. Burnaby needs a different politics. Teachers, parents and city workers, collaborating closely, can do what needs to be done.
