What We Do
Emergency Management is a division of the Public Safety & Community Services Department.
Our goal
A disaster resilient community for all to live work and plan in. We support our vision by:
- delivering emergency response training to staff and our Burnaby Emergency Volunteers,
- providing an operationally ready Emergency Operations Centre,
- facilitating and delivering municipal emergency exercises to increase staff skills and promote collaboration between municipal and external resources,
- updating and developing plans to identify roles and responsibilities during emergencies and disasters and testing those plans through exercises,
- providing a link to the Emergency Preparedness Committee of School District 41,
- creating relationships and engaging internal and external stakeholders, and
- delivering emergency preparedness awareness training to Burnaby businesses and organizations.
Our mission
Support and serve the citizens of Burnaby in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from emergencies and disasters through a coordinated and responsive emergency management program.
The City Emergency Program Coordinator works with all other City departments, the local business community, local residents, other emergency service agencies, and all levels of government toward the establishment of an emergency resilient community.
The 4 Pillars
Burnaby’s Emergency Program is an active and progressive one that involves the preparation of detailed response plans that comprise a number of strategies and initiatives that follow the four pillars of emergency management:

Mitigation & Prevention

Preparedness

Response

Recovery
