Bob Steele: Collages

Bob Steele

June 9-August 10, 2014
Bob Prittie Library

Bob Steele’s relationship with the arts in Burnaby predates the 1967 opening of the gallery itself by at least six years. Three works by Bob Steele were exhibited in the First Burnaby National Print Show organized by the Burnaby Art Society in the summer of 1961. Two of his works were included in the second National Print show and for the third show he contributed three artworks as well as the theme graphic which was used to promote the exhibition. Bob Steele has since had three solo exhibitions at the Burnaby Art Gallery and been included in many of our group shows.

This Bob Prittie library exhibit features many recent collage works created by Bob Steele from materials as diverse as old family photographs depicting rural life in early 1900s to magazine advertising created for 2014 audiences. Also included is a selection of photographs and artworks in various print media selected from the 100 Bob Steele artworks that are part of the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection.

The staff of the Burnaby Art Gallery was assisted in the presentation of this exhibition by this year’s Curatorial Underground students K.D. and J.V. of Burnaby Central and J.K. of Byrne Creek Secondary. Each year the students chosen for Underground: The Curatorial Experience spend a week working with gallery staff exploring different career options in the visual arts and working on special projects such as this one.
