About the Exhibition

Lynne Cohen is best known for her photographs of institutional interior spaces. Generally inaccessible to the public, these spaces include medical laboratories, private offices, factories, shooting ranges and military installations. This exhibition features work from the 1970s through to the early 2000s, and is the first time in several decades that Cohen’s work has been exhibited in Western Canada.

Lynne Cohen (b. Racine, Wisconsin, 1944) lived and worked in Canada from 1973 until her death in 2014. Cohen studied at the University of Wisconsin (BS 1967), the Slade School of Art, University of London, 1964-1965; and Eastern Michigan University (MA 1969). She held teaching positions at Eastern Michigan University, University of Ottawa, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and Virginia Commonwealth University, and was a recipient of numerous awards of merit, including the Governor General's Award in Visual Arts and Media Arts in 2005. Cohen’s work is represented in over 50 public collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Australian National Gallery, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

This exhibition is included as part of the Capture Photography Festival 2019, and includes loans from the Canada Council Art Bank, the estate of Lynne Cohen, and Olga Korper Gallery, Toronto.
