2015 Citizen of the Year

Mayor Derek Corrigan and Burnaby City Council are pleased to announce that Mr. George Kawaguchi has been named the winner of the 2015 Kushiro Cup and Outstanding Citizen of the Year.

Mr. George Kawaguchi has been chosen for this award for his dedication and many years of volunteer service given to the City. His volunteers activities include: Director of Transportation for the Burnaby BC Seniors Games, Board of Directors of the MJ Fox Theatre, MOC Assistant to South Africa 2010 Olympics, MOC Assistant to Great Britain Paralympics, 10 years on the Board of the BC Games Society, 6 years on the Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission, and 15 years as Coach/Administrator of the South Burnaby Metro Club.

Mr. Kawaguchi’s dedication to the development of sport and recreation in Burnaby has positively impacted our community and its members. Appreciation for his commitment is shared by many, and is highlighted by his nominators who expressed sincere gratitude for his enthusiasm and tireless efforts in assisting and supporting others.

One of Mr. Kawaguchi’s nominator’s summed up their nomination by stating, “for over 40 years, George has been a prime example of community spirit and involvement”. The City of Burnaby appreciates Mr. Kawaguchi’s generosity of time that he has given and continues to give.
