2016 Citizens of the Year

Jim and Lindy McQueen

Lindy and Jim McQueen

Mayor Derek Corrigan and Burnaby City Council are pleased to announce that Jim and Lindy McQueen have been named the winners of the 2016 Kushiro Cup and Outstanding Citizens of the Year.

Jim and Lindy started volunteering upon their retirement in 2006. Since then, they have donated thousands of hours to various organizations and events in Burnaby including the Edmonds City Fair & Classic Car Show, the Festival of Lights, Burnaby Seniors’ Games, Taekwondo World Championships, the Community Policing Advisory Committee, the Edmonds People in Community Residents Association (EPIC) Community Garden, and Edmonds Bike Fair. They have also used their own funds to buy food and other goods for needy people in Burnaby. For example, for a number of years they have brought healthy snacks and drinks to the KRIB (Kids Recreating in Burnaby) Youth Centre on a weekly basis. Their volunteer activities are as diverse as their skills, including annual community and major City of Burnaby events. They also participate in many ongoing volunteer activities, such as: the Southeast District Community Policing Advisory Committee, Welcoming Seniors Spaces, Morley Elementary School and EPIC.

As stated by one of the nominators of Jim and Lindy McQueen: “Lindy and Jim are role models for others and are greatly respected by many people for their volunteer efforts in the City of Burnaby. Both of them truly exemplify what it means to be Burnaby’s Outstanding Citizens of the Year”.
