2018 Kushiro Cup Winner

Laida Falsetto

Laida Falsetto

Mayor Mike Hurley and Burnaby City Council are pleased to announce Laida Falsetto has been named the winner of the 2018 Kushiro Cup and Outstanding Citizen of the Year.

Laida is a mentor, leader and champion for children at Byrne Creek Secondary School where she has taught since 2006. She believes by mentoring kids, they can be and achieve anything. Laida has organized and supported scholarship opportunities for post-secondary programs and has helped develop strong and mindful leadership students at all grade levels through student-developed and run events.

For ten years she has been an active participant of PAWS (Paving a Way for Success), a program for new refugee students to help them become confident workers, build their leadership skills and transition into Canadian culture by helping them find work experience in the community. She believes supporting refugee students based on their needs will help them to experience success.

Laida’s passion for helping students extends beyond the classroom and into the community. Laida and her student team packed and delivered 80 hampers to Burnaby families last year in an annual Community Hamper Drive to support families in need over Winter Break.

In addition, Laida has partnered with the Burnaby Firefighter Charitable Society participating in events such as Pancake Breakfasts, Year End Carnival and Snack Drives; as well as, joined the iAK Foundation Canada partaking in activities which spread kindness throughout the community.

Laida has been a tireless supporter of students and the community. She has devoted countless hours mentoring students and participating in local events to support refugees and families to make school and community a better place to live for all.
