Introduction to Pottery

Designed for absolute beginners to discover

a range of basic methods used in making

clay forms by hand and on the wheel.

Learn glazing and decorating techniques.

Early registration recommended.

Making Pots for Soda Firing

Explore a variety of techniques, including

throwing, altering, and handbuilding, while

giving consideration to both aesthetic

principles and creating forms suitable for

soda firing. Each student is allotted 2 cu. ft.

of kiln space. One session covers glazing,

followed by technicians loading and firing

the kiln. Students participate in the end

of the firing when the soda is introduced.

Unloading and critiques take place in the last

class. Intermediate to advanced: you must

be able to throw an 8” cylinder.

Pottery Open Workshop

These non-instructional sessions allow you

to use our studio to practice on the wheel

or finish work started in class. All sessions

use high-fire stoneware clay. Only work

produced at the Shadbolt Centre from clay

purchased here can be fired in our kilns.

Open workshops are offered on a drop-in,

first-come basis. Workshop tickets for each

four-hour session must be purchased

at the front office prior to the start time.

Tutorials in Clay

Practice specific wheel techniques and focus

on problem areas. Work produced will not

be fired. All instructors are professional

artists with wide and varied backgrounds

in ceramics. Call 604-205-3042 for more

details or to schedule a lesson. Note: lessons

must be booked one week in advance

and payment received. No cancellations

without 48 hours notice. Applicable lab and

supply fees are extra. Senior discount not

applicable to this program.
