City of Burnaby achieves Living Wage Employer certification

The City of Burnaby has been certified as a Living Wage Employer, an important step in delivering on our commitment to creating and sustaining the best quality of life for our entire community.

“Being a Living Wage Employer is about investing in our employees, helping families make ends meet and building a stronger community,” said Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley. “We are proud to raise the bar and set an example for other employers.”

The living wage in Metro Vancouver is currently $19.50 per hour and is calculated annually by the Living Wage for Families Campaign. The living wage represents the hourly amount needed to support a family of four with two parents working full time. To be certified as a Living Wage Employer, all wages for direct staff, contract staff and contractors must meet the standard. 

Steps to Living Wage certification

  • October 1, 2019 – living wage extended to all city staff
  • January 1, 2020 – External service providers working with the City of Burnaby must pay a living wage as new contracts are assigned or renewed. Applies to contractors and sub-contractors
  • January 9, 2020 – Living Wage for Families Campaign approves City’s Living Wage certification

“By paying a living wage to its staff and contractors, the City of Burnaby demonstrates what it means to be a progressive and socially responsible employer,” said Halena Seiferling, campaign organizer with the Living Wage for Families Campaign.

The City joins many Burnaby-based businesses and organizations, including the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society and the United Way of the Lower Mainland, as certified Living Wage Employers. We encourage other employers to make a positive contribution to the community through this initiative.
