The City of Burnaby’s strong commitment to workplace health and safety continues to deliver results—creating safer environments for staff and generating financial savings that help the City manage its resources responsibly.
Since joining WorkSafeBC’s Certificate of Recognition (COR) program in 2012, the City has earned over $6 million in rebates by consistently meeting and exceeding provincial health and safety standards. In 2024, the City received its highest annual rebate to date, with a combined return of $866,328 for the City of Burnaby and the Burnaby Public Library. This rebate represents 10% of the WorkSafeBC premiums paid, which are calculated based on payroll and related regulatory costs.
“The City maintains a high standard of health and safety across all our departments and it’s fantastic to see our efforts recognized through the Certificate of Recognition program,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “Every dollar we earn in savings thanks to our proactive approach to safety is another dollar we can invest in our community.”
The COR program recognizes employers who demonstrate leadership in occupational health and safety and who go beyond minimum regulatory requirements. While the financial rebates are a positive outcome, the City’s primary focus remains on protecting the health and safety of its employees.
