Burnaby Household Travel Survey

About this project
The City of Burnaby conducted a comprehensive household travel survey in 2024 to better understand how residents move around the city. More than 2,450 households participated by sharing their daily travel patterns through phone interviews and online responses.
We thank everyone who contributed to the survey –your input helps shape the future of transportation in Burnaby.
You can explore the results and learn more through our interactive dashboard.
Why we are doing the survey?
Household travel surveys are commonly used and essential tools for transportation planning. They help cities:
- understand current travel patterns and mode choices
- evaluate the impact of existing policies
- set benchmarks for future comparisons
- inform decisions that support sustainable, efficient and inclusive mobility
What we collected:
The survey captured travel data from all household members aged five and older over a recent weekday. Information was gathered at three levels:
- Household: Number of members, vehicles, dwelling type and more
- Individual: Age, employment status, driver’s licence and other demographics
- Trip: Origin, destination, time, mode(s) of travel (e.g. car, transit, bike, walk), and trip purpose
Over 24,000 survey packages were mailed to randomly selected addresses across Burnaby. Participation was voluntary, with options to respond online or by phone. A prize draw encouraged responses. The survey was conducted by R.A. Malatest & Associates Ltd. in association with Urban Systems. Please visit here to learn more about the survey administration.
