About this project
The Central Park Master Plan (CPMP) is a long-term plan that will shape the development and enhancement of Central Park, one of the most popular and iconic parks in Burnaby. The CPMP will build on the previous Management Plan (2009) and reflect the current and future needs and aspirations of the community.
The CPMP will be developed in 2 phases, with extensive public consultation and interested party engagement at each stage. Phase 1 will focus on the planning for the urban edge of Central Park, referred to as “The Triangle”, located at Kingsway and Patterson Avenue. This area is a critical node in the proposed linear park along the BC Parkway and has been identified as a priority for redevelopment and enhancement, as it has the potential to provide more specialized community event space, support the activation and animation of the park, and create a stronger connection and identity for the park.
Phase 2 will cover the planning for the remainder of Central Park, which will address the overall park vision, principles, goals, and objectives, as well as the specific park areas and amenities. The 2 planning phases will ultimately be consolidated into a single final CPMP document with an implementation plan.
About Central Park: Spanning 86 hectares, Central Park features lush forests and trails, recreation and sports facilities, various park amenities, and hosts many community events. With easy access via the SkyTrain, Kingsway and cycling paths, Central Park serves as a vital green space for both residents and visitors.
What's happening now?
A site survey and analysis has been completed, and conceptual spatial program layout has been drafted. Public engagement is anticipated to launch in summer 2024. We're committed to making additional efforts to actively engage with residents and current users and gather feedback from community members. Please check this webpage for information and dates.
Questions and answers
Central Park is a cherished community asset that provides a range of recreational, social, cultural, and environmental benefits to the residents and visitors of Burnaby. However, the park is facing increasing pressures and challenges, such as:
- The ongoing densification of Metrotown and the surrounding areas, which increases the demand for parkland and services.
- The aging and outdated park infrastructure and amenities, which require renewal and improvement.
- The changing demographics and preferences of the park users require more diverse and inclusive park programming and design.
- The impacts of climate change and urbanization, which affect the park's natural environment and resilience.
The CPMP will provide a strategic framework and direction to address these issues and ensure that Central Park continues to be a vibrant, accessible, and sustainable park for generations to come.
We want to hear from you! Your input and feedback are essential to the success of the CPMP.
