Chinese Canadian Apology Public Art Project
About the project
Following the City of Burnaby’s official apology for historic discrimination against people of Chinese descent, Burnaby Public Art is launching the first phase and process towards a permanent commemorative public artwork. Slated for completion in 2028, the artwork will stand as a lasting marker of the City’s apology and a meaningful place for learning, reflection and collective healing.
An open call was held in May to select eight community members to serve on a committee. This committee will provide guidance and expertise to the project team and help inform the commissioning of the artwork.
The open call is now closed. Thank you to everyone who applied. The selected committee members will be announced in July.
Public art in Burnaby
Public art has the power to energize public space. At its best, it promotes thinking and debate and helps us tell the story of who we are and who we hope to be. Burnaby’s Public Art Program harnesses ideas to spark dialogue about the past, present and future. By prioritizing community-engaged art, we seek to make creative expressions that are inclusive and reflective of the myriad perspectives that shape our city.
