In an exciting milestone, the newly created Burnaby Housing Authority (BHA) has advanced its first two projects that together would deliver 387 new rental homes across the city.
“These Burnaby Housing Authority projects represent thoughtful, people-centred approaches to housing,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “They demonstrate the kind of collaborative work required to expand housing options while maintaining livability.”
The BHA has submitted a rezoning application for a property at 10th Avenue and Newcombe Street, with plans to build 204 new affordable and market rental homes. The proposal features two six-storey buildings with shared indoor and outdoor amenities, including patios, community gardens and landscaped green spaces, to foster connection and a sense of belonging.
“Our mission is to deliver inclusive housing solutions that meet the needs of Burnaby residents,” said John McEown, CEO of the Burnaby Housing Authority. “These proposals help move that work forward in a meaningful way."
In Edmonds at Marine Drive and Byrnepark Drive, the BHA has submitted a building permit application for 183 new rental townhomes, a mix of affordable and market units, in collaboration with Mosaic Homes. Designed with families in mind, the ground oriented 2 and 3 bedroom homes respond to growing demand for family friendly rental options and support Burnaby’s long term housing strategy.
“As a leading homebuilder in the province, Mosaic, in collaboration with the Burnaby Housing Authority, is pleased to bring our expertise to create one of the largest new purpose-built affordable and market rental townhome communities in the region,” said Chris Barbati, President of Mosaic Homes. “Over the past 25 years, Mosaic has delivered more than 8,000 homes in Burnaby and across the region, and we’re proud to support the Burnaby Housing Authority’s vision for new rental townhome housing in the city.”
