Highway 1 closes overnight for major milestone on Burnaby Lake Pedestrian-Cyclist Overpass

Last updated: November 3, 2025

The Burnaby Lake Pedestrian-Cyclist Overpass is reaching an important milestone this weekend, as crews prepare to lift the bridge deck over Highway 1. To safely complete this work, there will be a full overnight closure between the Sprott and Gaglardi exits on Saturday, November 8.

With lane closures starting Saturday afternoon, drivers should expect major delays on Highway 1, Lougheed Highway and nearby areas. Please plan ahead, using alternate routes and modes of travel if possible.

  • Lane closures will start in the afternoon at 4 pm on Saturday.
  • Full closure in both directions will occur from Saturday 10 pm to Sunday 6 am.
  • Traffic will be detoured on to the Lougheed Highway.
  • Drivers must exit Highway 1 at Willingdon, Sprott, or Gaglardi.

Opening early next year, the Burnaby Lake Overpass will be a safe, accessible pedestrian and cyclist crossing between key regional trail networks and destinations, such as Deer Lake, Burnaby Lake, City Hall, and the Burnaby Village Museum.

The pedestrian and cyclist crossing is part of a suite of transportation investments taking place throughout Burnaby, making our city more connected and liveable for generations to come. The project is funded by the City of Burnaby, TransLink, the Province of B.C. and the Government of Canada.
