Burnaby Art Gallery Unveils Marika Swan ƛ̓upinup’s First Solo Exhibition

Last updated: November 5, 2025

Step into a world of duality and connection through the highly anticipated first solo exhibition by acclaimed artist Marika Swan ƛ̓upinup, “A Circle Strong Enough to Carry Both Sides.” Running from November 14, 2025 to January 25, 2026 at the Burnaby Art Gallery, you will experience Swan’s evocative exploration of balance, unity and the intricate relationships that shape our lives.

Swan’s large-scale woodblock prints and mixed media works weave together playful visions of spiritual realities informed by the profound carving and philosophical traditions of her Nuu-chah-nulth heritage. Introduced to printmaking as a tool for political organizing, her art challenges us to reflect on the world we inhabit and the possibilities we can create together. The exhibition showcases new works alongside Swan’s extensive portfolio, exploring themes of reciprocity, interdependence, and personal responsibility that have underpinned her twenty years as a printmaker.

Marika Swan ƛ̓upinup is not only a visionary artist, but also a dedicated mother and community arts organizer of mixed Tla-o-qui-aht, Scottish and Irish descent. Her creative practice centers on woodblock relief printmaking, enriched with carving, stencil and photography—each layer reflecting her deep engagement with Nuu-chah-nulth cosmology.

The opening reception for this exhibition features live printmaking, with a free, limited edition print by Marika Swan. Join us for this special event and see printmaking in action!
