Burnaby hero Tony Guzzo recognized for saving senior during apartment fire

Last updated: November 26, 2025

Mayor Mike Hurley and Burnaby City Council are honoured to recognize Tony Guzzo with Burnaby’s Public Safety Award for his extraordinary bravery.

On April 16, 2024, a fire engulfed an apartment building in Burnaby. Tony Guzzo alerted residents of the fire, and when he discovered a 79-year-old woman trapped on her balcony he sprang into action. Tony retrieved his extension ladder and climbed up to assist her. Thick smoke blocked the hallway exit, so Tony improvised by using furniture to help her over the railing. With the arrival of Burnaby Fire Department, Tony’s quick thinking and bravery helped lead to her safe rescue. This remarkable rescue was caught on video.

“Tony’s selfless actions exemplify courage and the very best of our community,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “His bravery reminds us of the power of stepping up in times of crisis.”
