Burnaby’s once-in-a-generation civic building program reaches 50% completion milestone

Last updated: March 9, 2026

The City of Burnaby is celebrating a major milestone in the most significant period of civic investment in Burnaby’s history, with several landmark projects now more than 50% complete.

“We’re delivering on our promise to provide Burnaby residents with world-class recreation, arts and public safety facilities,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “With these facilities, we’re investing in the infrastructure our growing city needs, to serve not only today’s generation but for generations to come.”

As of this month, four major projects have surpassed the 50% completion milestone. These projects represent a once-in-a-generation initiative to replace aging facilities and build new ones that meet modern standards and respond to population growth and evolving community needs. This is not only the largest capital construction program in Burnaby’s history, but also currently one of the largest municipal investments in community facilities in Canada.

Projects at the halfway point include:

Burnaby Lake Recreation Complex

  • Home to Burnaby’s first Olympic-sized swimming pool, this will be one of the largest and more versatile community aquatic facilities in Western Canada, supporting community recreation, competitive sport and provincial events. It will also include an NHL-sized arena.
  • Estimated completion date: 2028

Cameron Community Centre and Library

  • This project in the Lougheed Town Centre neighbourhood will be four times larger than the original facility, and will include an aquatic facility, expanded library, gym, fitness studios, an indoor running track and a vibrant civic plaza for gathering and events. This green building will also have Burnaby’s first green roof and solar panels.
  • Estimated completion date: 2028

James Cowan Theatre Replacement Project

  • This modern, accessible, professional-grade performance venue at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts will anchor Burnaby’s arts and culture community.
  • Estimated completion date: 2027

Community Safety Building

  • This purpose-built facility will strengthen emergency response and public safety services for a growing city. It replaces the original Burnaby RCMP detachment building built in 1967.
  • Estimated completion date: 2027

On the horizon: Brentwood

  • Construction is now underway on the future site of the Brentwood Community Centre, which will serve one of Burnaby’s fastest-growing neighbourhoods.
