From soccer to storytelling, take part in Burnaby’s Truth and Reconciliation activities throughout September

Throughout September, the City of Burnaby hosts events and activities in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Residents are invited to take part in opportunities to learn about Indigenous cultures, reflect on the legacy of residential schools, and support ongoing reconciliation efforts. With respect, the City recognizes the children who never returned home, residential school survivors, and their families and communities. 

“In Burnaby, we are committed to taking meaningful action, while continuing to build strong, productive and respectful relationships with the Host Nations whose histories, cultures and stewardship are deeply connected to these lands,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “Truth and Reconciliation isn’t just about the actions we’re taking as a City – it’s also about ensuring that all members of our community have a chance to engage with this important subject.”

Program highlights

• Join Mayor and Council, Host Nations representatives and community members as Burnaby raises the Every Child Matters and Survivors' flags at City Hall in recognition of residential school Survivors, the children who never returned home, and their families and communities on Tuesday, September 8 at noon.
• Now in its fourth year, Burnaby’s Hope and Health Community Camp brings together hundreds of children and youth for soccer, cultural teachings, Indigenous arts and crafts, and learning opportunities that support reconciliation through sport and community connection on Saturday, September 19.
• Join us for a talk with the authors of Reconciling: A Lifelong Struggle to Belong, a memoir of Musqueam Elder Larry Grant, on Monday, September 14 at the Bob Prittie Metrotown Library.
• Hear from Scott Munro, CEO of the First Nations Financial Management Board, as he explores opportunities for meaningful reconciliation and stronger partnerships between First Nations, businesses and communities on Thursday, September 24 in Building Indigenous Partnerships: An Inclusive Economic Future, co-hosted by the City and the Burnaby Board of Trade.

Learn about the Host Nations whose ancestors have occupied and used these lands, including parts of present-day Burnaby, for thousands of years. 

The month-long program features opportunities for residents of all ages to learn from Indigenous leaders, authors, knowledge holders, and community members through events, sport, Indigenous art displays, and workshops.
