Last updated: October 28, 2026
The City of Burnaby has recognized retired firefighter Patrick Curley with a Public Safety Award for his courage and selfless actions in helping rescue a driver from a burning vehicle.
On October 5, 2025, an elderly driver lost control of her vehicle while travelling on Dundas Street. After striking a parked vehicle, the car crashed into a large tree. The airbags deployed and the vehicle caught fire, leaving the driver trapped inside. Without hesitation and despite the danger to himself, Curley entered the smoke-filled vehicle through the passenger side, freed the driver from her seatbelt and pulled her to safety before emergency crews arrived.
“Patrick's quick thinking, courage and willingness to put himself at risk for a stranger makes him a hero,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “His actions remind us of the very best of our community.”
Burnaby City Council congratulates Patrick on this well-deserved recognition and thanks him for his extraordinary act of heroism and commitment to helping others.
