Burnaby Animal Shelter

About this project

We are building a new animal shelter at 3202 Norland Avenue to provide a safer, more functional and welcoming environment for animals, staff, volunteers and the public. To continue serving the community during construction, the BC SPCA has relocated to a temporary facility at 6229 Laurel Street. Visit the BC SPCA website to learn more.

The design of the new shelter includes dedicated dog and cat intake and isolation areas, adoption spaces, examination and nursing rooms, indoor and outdoor kennels, animal activity yards, and a welcoming public plaza and meet-and-greet area. The building has also been designed to be accessible for people of all abilities, with an accessible pathway leading to the entrance.

We expect the new facility will be finished in summer 2027.

The City of Burnaby has been working closely with its project partners, Vasto Builders and the BC SPCA, to design and deliver this important community facility.

Project updates

Summer 2026

The existing building has been vacated in preparation for demolition. Site mobilization will begin in late August, including the installation of temporary fencing and signage, site access controls, and construction facilities. Temporary electrical and water services will follow.

The public may notice occasional contractor and delivery vehicles and temporary access changes within the project site. No road closures are currently anticipated. Work takes place from 7 am to 8 pm Monday to Friday and 9 am to 8 pm Saturday. No work occurs on Sundays or statutory holidays.
