About this project
The Burnaby Food System Strategy is a strategic plan the City developed to improve the quality, fairness, and sustainability of Burnaby’s food systems.
Food security
Working towards a City where everyone has both access to food and choice in what they eat. The food options Burnaby residents have should be safe, culturally acceptable, and nutritious.
Food sustainability
Helping to make sure the processes of growing food and getting it to our tables respects both our environment, and all the people who work to grow, harvest, transport, and prepare our food.
The strategy was adopted by City Council in November of 2025.

Burnaby Community Food Charter
Burnaby staff worked with a community-based advisory group and local community organizations to better understand and prioritize the challenges and opportunities in addressing Burnaby’s food security. During this process, Burnaby signed the Burnaby Community Food Charter, which lays out our values and commitments for our community’s food system. This document was developed with interested parties across the community, like organizations providing support for food-insecure people, people managing and growing in community gardens, and advocates for social policy changes. The Charter is a community-held document, which all community organizations, private businesses, educational institutions, and levels of government can sign. Signatories commit to creating sustainable food systems and food security in Burnaby.
