Douglas Road and Laurel Street Upgrades
About the project
The City of Burnaby is upgrading Douglas Road and Laurel Street to improve safety, accessibility and transportation connections while renewing aging infrastructure.
The project will take place along:
- Douglas Road, from Regent Street to Sprott Street
- Laurel Street, from Douglas Road to Godwin Avenue
The anticipated construction schedule is September 2026 to winter 2027.
Improvements include:
- road reconstruction
- upgrades to underground utilities
- new sidewalks
- new street lighting
- pedestrian and accessibility improvements
- bus stop accessibility improvements
- a new traffic signal at Douglas Road and Laurel Street
- improvements to on-street parking in selected locations
- a multi-use path connecting the new Holdom Overpass and local cycling routes
These upgrades will help support future growth in the area and improve how people move through the neighbourhood.
What's happening now
Construction is anticipated to begin in September 2026, with completion expected in winter 2027. Updates about construction activities, traffic impacts and project milestones will be posted on this webpage as work progresses. There will also be electronic message boards on site to notify public of traffic changes and construction schedule.
What to expect during construction
During construction, residents and commuters can expect temporary traffic changes, pedestrian detours, construction noise and other short-term disruptions, including reduced on-street parking and bus stop changes.
Access to homes, businesses and emergency services will be maintained throughout construction whenever possible. The City is working with our contractor Jack Cewe Construction Ltd. to minimize disruptions and provide advance notice when work is expected to affect access to properties.
Supporting the Holdom Overpass Project
This project complements the Holdom Overpass project, which is being delivered by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority in partnership with the City of Burnaby and CN, with funding from the Government of Canada.
The road updates will create a new multi-use path connection between the Holdom Overpass and the Dominion Street bike route, making it easier and safer for people to travel through the area using active transportation.
