Playground Upgrades

About this project
Every year, Burnaby makes upgrades to neighbourhood playgrounds around the city to provide new, engaging ways to play for children while improving safety, accessibility and inclusivity. Playgrounds selected for upgrades are generally those with the oldest play equipment in service. We also aim to ensure all our neighbourhoods across the city have modern, quality places to play. This year’s parks scheduled for upgrades are:
- Forest Grove Park (west playground)
- Jim Lorimer Park
- Lobley Park
- Poplar Park
2025 upgrades
The new playground features a tall play structure for big kids with a spinner, slide, and a variety of climbing features. The elevated platforms in the playground help emphasize the connection with nature and the surrounding forest canopy. Upgrades also include improved drainage and accessibility on site.

To help protect the playground from potential rising water levels and help make the park a valuable outdoor space for the Brentwood community, we’re planning to rebuild the playground at a higher elevation. The new playground will also feature increased play opportunities and more accessible play features. Other site upgrades we’re planning for phase one include improved pedestrian circulation, seating, introducing a shade structure and planting shade trees.
The new playground at Lobley Park features 2 new accessible play structures sporting forest and firehall themes to reflect adjacent mature conifer trees and Fire Station 3. Upgrades also include a colourful rubberized surfacing, funded in part by donations from the Tire Stewardship BC, along with bright site furnishings, and updated pedestrian paths connections.

The new playground includes expanded play areas featuring inclusive play structures with a focus on ground play. A new “friendship swing” accommodates 2 people with back support. Additional features include a kids cycling loop, seating, picnic tables for family gatherings, a new access at 18th Avenue, and pollinator meadows with 2 insect hotels.
