About this project
Jim Lorimer Park is a medium-sized park located near Brentwood Town Centre. Because it’s on land next to Still Creek, the park is more prone to seasonal flooding, and during recent extreme weather events, the park and playground suffered water damage. This project will plan, design and construct a more flood-resistant playground and other site enhancements in Jim Lorimer Park. The new park plan will incorporate flood mitigation measures, making the playground and overall park more resilient to rises in water level while respecting and featuring the natural character and ecosystems of the park. We’re planning to complete work in 2 phases:
Phase 1: Playground upgrades
To help protect the playground from potential rising water levels and help make the park a valuable outdoor space for the Brentwood community, we’re planning to rebuild the playground at a higher elevation. The new playground will also feature increased play opportunities, more accessible play features, and rubber surfacing which is both more resilient to flooding and more accessible. Other site upgrades we’re planning for phase one include improved pedestrian circulation, seating, introducing a shade structure and planting shade trees. The new playground will be built in 2025.
Phase 2: Connectivity upgrades
Phase 2 will focus on building a boardwalk to link the park and Gilmore Urban Trail. The boardwalk connection will complete the original masterplan for Jim Lorimer Park and contribute to the walkability and ease of pedestrian access to the park. We’ll be determining the timeline for phase 2 construction after the completion of phase one.
What's happening now?
We’ve completed our site survey, and engaged with local residents on the types of playground and improvements they’d like to see in the park. Our team is currently using the information we’ve gathered to design a park and playground space which is both flood-resistant and fun and convenient for residents of all ages to enjoy.
