We’re building a new pedestrian scramble crossing at the intersection of Central Boulevard and the Metrotown parkade access, near the Metrotown SkyTrain station.
The scramble, which stops vehicle traffic during designated phases and allows pedestrians to cross in all directions, including diagonally, will eliminate conflicts and increase safety.
Construction begins in May
Construction is scheduled to begin early May and is expected to be completed in June.
Pedestrian and vehicle access will be maintained, and temporary signs and traffic control personnel will help guide you through the area. Please use caution near the work zone and allow extra travel time.
Scramble crossings improve safety
This intersection is very busy, with people walking, driving, cycling and accessing transit. The new crossing will help improve safety and make it easier for everyone to move through the area.
Many urban centres around the world, including downtown Vancouver, use pedestrian scramble crossings to improve safety and reduce conflicts.
Some delays may happen, especially during busy times. We’ll monitor the intersection and make adjustments if needed.
How to use the crossing
Pedestrians
Wait for the pedestrian signal
Cross in any direction, including diagonally
Follow posted signals, audio messaging and signage
Drivers
Stop during the pedestrian crossing phase
Right turns on red are not allowed at this intersection
Follow all posted signs and signals
Cyclists
If crossing as a pedestrian, dismount and walk through the intersection
If riding on the roadway, follow the traffic signal (not pedestrian signal)
Transit users
Bus services will continue to operate through the area wherever possible
Any temporary changes will be communicated by TransLink
Clear signage and audio messaging will be in place to help everyone use the intersection safely. We’re working to minimize disruptions and maintain safe access for all road users.
