The Burnaby Fire Department and the City of Burnaby are investing in a wildfire detection system to significantly enhance public safety in the city’s forested areas.
To make this system work, we are installing ground-level sensors and cameras that can detect early signs of fire in near real-time. Early wildfire detection will help our fire crews act quickly to protect our communities.
The sensors will be installed in forested areas. In select locations around the city, we are also installing smoke detection cameras on top of buildings. Together, the cameras and sensors are trained to detect smoke and early fire signs and notify the Fire Department to take action.
These cameras:
Are not capable of continuous live recording.
Only capture still images upon smoke detection in the environment for early fire detection and effective fire incident intervention/response.
Only take snapshots of camera view, after any personal identifying information detected is blurred, for personal privacy protection by design.
Only collect information authorized under s. 26(c) of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act for the City’s Wildfire Prevention Program.
Access to camera feeds and detection is highly restricted to authorized personnel responsible for wildfire monitoring and emergency coordination.
Our goal is to enhance wildfire readiness and protect lives, property and Burnaby’s beautiful landscapes, while respecting the privacy of the communities we serve.
