Bettear Accessibility App

Enjoy audio accessible theatre and events at the Shadbolt Centre

We are introducing Bettear, a free app designed to enhance theatre and event experiences for individuals with hearing impairments at the Shadbolt Centre. 

At the City of Burnaby, we’re committed to fostering an accessible, inclusive and meaningful experiences for all. 

Get started

  1. Before the show begins, download the Bettear app for the hard of hearing via iOS and Android smartphones.  
  2. Ensure your earphones, hearing aids or cochlear implants are connected to your smartphone.

How to use Bettear

  • Open the Bettear app
  • Select the Show icon 
  • Press “tap to search” 
  • Shadbolt Centre will appear
  • Connect to “BETTEAR_5” network
  • Press join
  • Once connected, experience high-quality, personalized sound

What you need to know

  • A registered account is not required—just log in via Apple or Google Play to download the app.
  • The app does not store personal information.
  • Customize your audio preferences under “Sound Setting” to create a tailored listening experience.
  • Expect minor audio delays during live-streamed events.

Select your preferred audio mode

  • Room sound: Hear the full ambiance, including audience chatter and room noise.
  • Just audio: Experience only the live performance, without background sounds.

Staying connected

  • If you leave the theatre (e.g., during intermission), you’ll need to reconnect upon returning.
  • Once connected to “BETTEAR_5,” you won’t have access to other Wi-Fi networks—but cellular data will still function.

Personalized sound calibration

Fine-tune your listening experience with 2 calibration options:

  1. Quick Calibration – Adjust sound instantly.
  2. Full Calibration – Customize output for both right and left ears.
