Kristen Krimmel’s careful selection and delicate representation of disposable packaging acknowledges the inherent appealing composition such packaging carries. Over some months, the artist collects a number of worn packages and selects those she chooses to draw deliberately and with acute attention to detail. Although the life of the object may, until the time it meets Krimmel’s doorstep, be subject to much haphazard treatment—tumbling in storage containers and floating along across various conveyers—Krimmel is discerning about which she chooses to draw. Each package has different compositional elements, some more attractive than others. Through a number of drawing mediums and Krimmel’s patience and precision, these compositional elements, such as the contrast between the translucency of packaging tape and the bright font of the directives, come to life. These pensive works become studies on beauty, the mundane, value, and impermanence. Curated by Emily Dundas Oke, BAG Assistant Curator.
