When to phone 9-1-1
9-1-1 is for fire, police or medical emergencies when immediate action is required—when someone’s health, safety or property is in jeopardy or a crime is in progress. If you call about an active fire, your call will be directed to our communications centre, and a fire truck will be dispatched immediately.

The Burnaby Fire Department is here to help with fire-related concerns, safety inspections, permits, and public education. Here’s what you can expect when you reach out:
For fire-related complaints (such as blocked fire exits or parking in fire lanes), our staff will collect your information confidentially and forward it to our Fire Prevention Division for follow-up. Information we’ll ask for:
- Date and time of your call
- Your name, address, and phone number

If you’re reporting a fire that happened previously and is no longer active, please note that our department cannot take action after the fact. For immediate response, call 911 while the incident is occurring.
In most cases, our team will follow up to organize inspections or provide information. For complaints, we’ll contact you only if more details are needed or if you request a follow-up.
