Learn about the Burnaby RCMP, community policing and how to contact the police

Burnaby RCMP is one of the largest detachments in Canada. Burnaby RCMP works in partnership with the City to help make Burnaby safe and peaceful for residents, businesses and visitors.

The detachment provides policing services in Burnaby. Police officers, city staff and volunteers work to improve and maintain public safety through a range of core policing and public education programs and services.

Burnaby RCMP has organized the city into 4 districts for operational purposes and to consult with local communities about their unique public safety concerns. Each has its own community police office.

Community policing

Community Policing involves the residents and businesses working with the police to create a safer city for everyone. Burnaby RCMP Community Response Team members and Crime Prevention Services staff engage with the local community to reduce crime and find new solutions to ongoing problems. Join our volunteer crime prevention programs or one of our Community Safety Advisory Committees.

When to phone 9-1-1

9-1-1 is for police, fire or medical emergencies when immediate action is required—when someone’s health, safety or property is in jeopardy or a crime is in progress.  Examples include:

  • An event that involves an immediate threat to person or property. Screams, attacks, gunshots, fire, car accident with injuries or any other medical emergency.
  • A substantive, in-progress crime. This includes fights, break-and-enters (with suspect on scene), or a report of an impaired driver.
  • A serious crime that has just occurred (i.e. robbery).

For more information, visit E-Comm 9-1-1

Online Crime Reporting

You can now report non-emergency crimes using Burnaby RCMP's new online crime reporting tool without having to visit or call a detachment. A police officer may follow up only if more information is needed.

Report a crime online

When to phone Burnaby RCMP Non-Emergency 604-646-9999

Use this number to report non-emergency situations where an immediate response or dispatch of the police is NOT required. Please help us keep emergency lines free for emergencies. If you are unsure, dial 911. Call takers will advise whether to call the non-emergency number.

Examples include:

  • Reporting a crime with no suspect (i.e. theft of license plate).
  • Reporting a crime with suspect, but the suspect is not on the scene (i.e. fraud).
  • Reporting a serious crime with a suspect, but with a lengthy delay (i.e. assault that occurred last night).

When you call the non-emergency line, our switchboard operator will ask questions to determine how best to assist you. You may be directed to an internal department (such as Victim Services) or an external agency if appropriate.

If your situation requires police involvement, our call takers will gather key details and create a police file for triaged response.

  • Who was involved
  • What happened
  • When and where it occurred
  • How the incident took place
  • Additional details specific to your situation
  • Caller’s name, address and date of birth so that we can contact you if needed

We aim to collect enough information to start an investigation while minimizing the need for you to repeat details.

Your report will be placed in the dispatch queue and assigned to an officer based on urgency and available resources. A police officer will follow up by phone (often from a blocked or private number) or in person to discuss your situation further. You may receive additional calls if more information is needed.

After a police file is assigned, the assigned officer will handle all communication and follow-up, including updates about your case.
