Classical music returns to Deer Lake Park for a weekend of free performances

Last updated: June 8, 2023

Burnaby residents and visitors will be able to enjoy a series of world-class performances this summer in a stunning outdoor setting, as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) and the Vancouver Opera (VO) are set to host free concerts in Deer Lake Park on July 15 and 16.

“Seeing a concert in Burnaby’s Deer Lake Park is an experience like no other and we’re thrilled to be hosting some incredible performances this summer,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “It’s an honour to host these symphony and opera performances, and to offer them free-of-charge so that all can come and enjoy this beloved Burnaby tradition.”

This year's 34th anniversary performance of Symphony in the Park (July 15 at 7:30 pm) will transport listeners to other worlds, whether it’s the story of British spy (Monty Norman’s James Bond Theme), an adventure through another galaxy (Star Wars Suite for Orchestra: III. Imperial March by John Williams) or the tale of a young wizard (William’s Hedwig's Theme from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone).

2023 also sees the return of Opera in Park (July 16 at 7:30 pm). Powerhouse singers and the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and Chorus will perform instantly recognizable classics like Habanera from Bizet’s Carmen, the Queen of the Night’s hair-raising aria from Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and highlights from Gaetano Donizetti’s triumph of the comedic opera buffa style, Don Pasquale.

Come early for free family activities and food trucks, bring a blanket or chair and a picnic and settle in for a wonderful weekend of entertainment with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Vancouver Opera.
