Classical music returns to Deer Lake Park for a weekend of free performances

Last updated: June 3, 2022

Burnaby residents and visitors will be able to enjoy a series of world-class performances this summer in a stunning outdoor setting, as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) and the Vancouver Opera are set to host free concerts in Deer Lake Park on July 16 and 17.

“Deer Lake Park is one of the greatest outdoor venues in all of British Columbia, and we are so excited to be able to bring people back to the park for some incredible performances this summer,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “And being able to offer this series free of charge is a great way to ensure everyone can experience this beloved Burnaby tradition.”

This year's 33rd anniversary performance of Symphony in the Park (July 16 at 7 pm) will transport listeners to other worlds, whether it’s the gritty streets of New York (Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story), the story of an alien visitor (Adventures on Earth, the theme from E.T. by John Williams) or one of the greatest love stories of all time (Tchaikovsky’s Romeo & Juliet - Fantasy Overture).

Symphony in the Park will also feature a solo performance from an up-and-coming young musician. This year's feature soloist will be chosen during the VSO Orchestral Institute’s concerto competition.

New in 2022 will be the inaugural performance of Opera in Park (July 17 at 7:30 pm) featuring classics from your favorite movies including Habanera in Carmen by Georges Bizet, Nessun Dorma from Turandot by Giacomo Puccini and O Fortuna from Carmina Burana by Carl Orff.
There will also be fun activities for families including an orchestra petting zoo, balloon twisters, face painting stations, a costume station, and various fun costumed performers roaming the site ready to pose for pictures and entertain.
