New video series focuses on youth gang and gun prevention

Last updated: May 22, 2024

The City of Burnaby is providing parents and caregivers with a new resource to help prevent young people from getting involved with gangs and guns.

The City is launching a series of videos designed to help parents and caregivers better recognize the signs of youth involvement in gangs, featuring expert insights from local youth service providers and the Burnaby RCMP. The videos also connect parents with community support programs that help youth thrive and meet their full potential. The full video series is online and will be used in future presentations by the RCMP and the City of Burnaby’s Crime Reduction team.

The series is part of a larger gangs and guns project being developed by the City, which includes a range of services for youth and their families, as well as research, community coordination and the development of a new gang and gun strategy for the City (in progress).

In March 2024, the City partnered with Simon Fraser University (SFU) to host the first Burnaby Gang and Gun Violence Prevention Symposium. The symposium brought together experts from across Canada and the United States to share insights and strategies on preventing youth gang violence. Over 200 people participated online and in person.

This project is funded through Public Safety Canada’s Building Safer Communities Fund. This funding is also supporting five community partner programs, as well as four research projects led by researchers at SFU.
