Call for Applications – 2026 Deer Lake Artist Residencies

Last updated: January 31, 2025

City of Burnaby provides residency opportunities for emerging and established artists.

Artists can now apply to take part in Burnaby’s Artist in Residence program, an opportunity to for artists to examine, create and refine their artistic practices in the tranquil and inspiring natural setting of Deer Lake Park.

Located on the ancestral and unceded territories of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Skwxwù7mesh speaking peoples, Deer Lake Park provides an environment for artists to immerse themselves in nature while they focus on their creative endeavors. Cultural amenities around Deer Lake Park include Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, Burnaby Art Gallery and Burnaby Village Museum.

Successful applicants will live in accommodations in one of two heritage homes: Baldwin House, designed in 1963 by Canadian architect Arthur Erickson; and Eagles Estate, built in 1929 by former owners Drs. Blythe and Violet Eagles. Studios and community engagement spaces are available at the arts centre, gallery and museum, and may include Burnaby libraries, parks and community centres.

Artists across multiple disciplines – visual artists, performers, musicians, land-based practitioners, poets, writers, potters and more – are encouraged to apply online for this program. Residencies typically range from two to six weeks and include housing and/or studio use.

Resident artists may work with the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, Burnaby Art Gallery and Burnaby Public Library staff to support artist-led community engagement projects aligned with the requirement of each residency. Alongside housing, resident artists will have access to rehearsal spaces and studios as well as other resources to support their creative endeavours.

Application Deadline: March 29, 2025 at 5 pm (PST). Covering residency requests between March 1, 2026 to December 5, 2026.
