City of Burnaby unveils updated Community Safety and Well-Being Plan

Last updated: May 28, 2025

The City of Burnaby is releasing its updated Community Safety and Well-Being Plan—a bold, forward-thinking strategy to create a safer Burnaby for all.

Building on the success of the City’s first Community Safety Plan in 2020, the updated plan reflects the voices of over 1,600 residents, businesses, and community partners who shared their experiences and priorities through surveys, pop-up events, focus groups, and workshops.

“This plan is a testament to our unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “Together, we’re taking proactive steps to ensure Burnaby remains a place where everyone feels safe, supported and empowered to thrive.”

Key highlights of the 2025 Community Safety and Well-Being Plan include:

  • Community safety and connection – Strengthening trust and collaboration between residents, the City, Burnaby RCMP, and Burnaby Fire Department.
  • Emergency and climate resilience – Enhanced preparedness for emergencies and disasters, extreme weather, and other emergencies, including new technologies and community education.
  • Safer public spaces – Initiatives to improve lighting, accessibility, and safety in parks, streets, and civic facilities.
  • Responsive and inclusive services – Programs that address homelessness and embed anti-racism, Indigenous leadership, and equity into a proactive approach to services.
  • Youth and Family First Strategy – A comprehensive new framework focused on prevention, intervention, and support for young people and families.

The plan outlines 17 strategic actions and over 60 initiatives, with new projects to be introduced annually. It also aligns with broader City strategies, including Burnaby 2050, the Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Framework, and the Anti-Racism Framework.

“This is more than a safety plan—it’s a community blueprint,” said Dave Critchley, General Manager of Community Safety. “It reflects the real concerns and hopes of Burnaby residents and sets a clear path forward for how we work together to build a safer city.”

The City invites all residents to learn more and get involved.
